Bagdogra Airport is undergoing a massive transformation, with a new terminal covering 70,400 square meters in its first phase and an additional 50,000 square meters planned for the second phase. The INR 1,560 crore project, led by the Airport Authority of India (AAI), aims to expand capacity and improve air connectivity. Despite the ongoing construction, current airport operations will continue without disruption.
Strategically located in Siliguri, Bagdogra Airport serves as a key gateway to the Himalayas and Northeast India. However, the existing infrastructure struggles with increasing passenger traffic. The expansion will enhance the airport’s ability to handle more domestic and international flights, ensuring smoother operations and better traveller experiences. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation growth.
The new terminal is expected to be ten times larger than the existing one, with modern amenities and improved facilities. According to Darjeeling BJP MP Raju Bista, an initial budget of INR 16 crore has been allocated, with further investments planned. The project will also drive economic growth, creating business opportunities and jobs in the region.
With enhanced airport infrastructure and increased connectivity, Bagdogra is set to become one of India’s most important regional airports. The expansion promises a seamless, world-class travel experience, attracting more tourists and boosting regional development.
