Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a new railway link connecting Bengaluru city to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The 7.9 km stretch between Doddajala and KIA will include three stations, with 6.25 km elevated and 1.65 km underground. This addition will complement the existing Metro and suburban rail connectivity to the airport.
Currently, KIA Halt station, located 3.5 km from the airport, operates limited train services. The new rail line aims to provide seamless access for passengers and airport employees. Bengaluru Airport, which recorded 40.73 million passengers in 2024, is expanding infrastructure to accommodate rising traffic. The Karnataka government is also considering three potential sites for a second airport.
To further ease congestion, the government has allocated INR 30,000 crore for suburban rail and metro projects. Additionally, 61 railway stations in Karnataka, including Whitefield and Yeshwanthpur Junction, will be reconstructed. A detailed project report on decongesting Bengaluru’s transport network is in progress.
With these developments, Bengaluru Airport is set to become a major global transit hub, enhancing regional connectivity and economic growth.
