The upcoming Halwara International Airport in Ludhiana is set to begin operations soon, with final preparations underway. The Centre has urged the Punjab government to hand over the completed terminal to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to expedite commercial flight services. The airport has received its ICAO code, ‘VIHX,’ while the IATA code is pending confirmation from the Indian Air Force.
With most infrastructure complete, the only remaining task is the overlaying of the runway, expected to be finished by March 31. Once this is done, airline bidding will begin, paving the way for flight operations. Air India has already announced plans to launch services from Ludhiana upon the airport’s activation.
AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar confirmed that the operational date will be finalised once the Punjab government officially transfers the terminal building. Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora has been actively coordinating with authorities to ensure a smooth transition.
Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal has been urged to facilitate the formal handover of the terminal. With all major components nearing completion, Halwara Airport is set to boost regional connectivity, making Ludhiana a key aviation hub in Punjab.
