With India emerging as a significant market for outbound tourism, Miami is setting its sights on attracting LGBTQ travellers from the country. Representatives from the Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau have recognised India’s vast potential as a source market, particularly given the growing visibility and acceptance of the LGBTQ community.
Speaking on the subject, Dan Rios, Director of LGBTQ+ Tourism Marketing at Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, noted, “India has a huge volume of potential travellers, and while many in the LGBTQ community may not be fully out or vocal, they are observing and engaging. By showcasing what Miami has to offer, we believe we can generate interest and encourage visits.”
Despite visa delays and Miami being a long-haul destination, Indian travellers continue to show strong interest in the U.S. The Miami tourism board acknowledges the lack of direct flights as a challenge but remains optimistic that Indian visitors will incorporate Miami into their broader U.S. travel plans.
“Direct flights would be ideal, but the Indian market is accustomed to making connections via the East or West Coast. We see Miami as part of a larger U.S. travel experience rather than a single-stop destination,” Rios stated.
The visit to India coincides with an LGBTQ symposium organised by the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) in New Delhi. Miami has been closely working with IGLTA in regions like Mexico, Brazil, and Japan to understand market characteristics and effectively connect with LGBTQ travellers.
“This is my first time in India, but I have collaborated with IGLTA on similar initiatives in other countries. Their expertise helps us tailor our approach to different markets,” said Rios.
Given India’s fragmented travel agent market, Miami is focusing on partnerships with the travel trade community to promote its diverse offerings. The city is known for its vibrant events, from mainstream festivals to LGBTQ-specific celebrations, making it an attractive destination for experience-driven travellers.
“Miami is not just a beach destination; we have an exciting mix of nightlife, culture, and world-class events. From the South Beach Wine & Food Festival to Art Basel, and LGBTQ events like Miami Beach Pride in April, there’s something for every traveller,” Rios highlighted.
Miami tourism officials are also keen to provide training programmes for B2B agents in India, both in-person and online, to educate them on the city’s offerings and help them craft customised itineraries.]
“Understanding how to present Miami as an inclusive destination is key. For instance, agents can highlight events like Miami Beach Pride as a celebration option rather than a direct pitch, which makes conversations easier with potential LGBTQ travellers,” he added.
