The Mizoram government has decided to transfer control of Lengpui Airport to the Indian Air Force (IAF). Announced during a cabinet meeting on October 16, 2024, the plan includes the IAF managing the airport’s runway and air traffic control, while the state retains oversight of other operations. The Working Committee on Lengpui Airport, led by Chairman TBC Lalvenchhunga, is currently drafting a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the IAF, with a report expected within three months.
The decision has faced strong backlash from NGOs and political leaders. The NGO Coordination Committee, which represents key civil society groups, expressed concerns about the loss of local control over the state’s most valuable infrastructure. Similarly, opposition leader and Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee President Lal Thanzara criticised the move, citing the state’s financial struggles and pointing out that the airport was built with INR 979 crores under the Congress ministry.
Civil society groups, including CYMA, MHIP, MUP, MZP, and MSU, have opposed the plan, calling it a threat to state autonomy. Lal Thanzara highlighted Mizoram’s significant debt of INR 3,000 crores, emphasising that handing over a critical resource like Lengpui Airport would deepen financial challenges. This sentiment resonates with other political parties, increasing pressure on the government to reassess its stance.
As the controversy escalates, the handover decision has sparked a broader debate about state control versus federal intervention in infrastructure projects. The next three months will be crucial as the government negotiates terms with the IAF and addresses growing criticism from opposition parties and civil society.
