The dream of a giant Ferris wheel gracing Mumbai’s skyline, akin to the iconic London Eye, is one step closer to reality. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has officially approved the “Mumbai Eye” project in its annual budget, paving the way for its development under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
First proposed by Shiv Sena in 2008, the Mumbai Eye aims to become a landmark attraction, offering panoramic views of the city. Despite its ambitious vision, the project has faced several delays and challenges over the years. Inspired by the success of the London Eye, the Ferris wheel is expected to boost tourism and provide a unique perspective of Mumbai’s sprawling skyline.
In 2022, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) proposed constructing the Mumbai Eye at the Bandra Reclamation promenade. However, the plan was abandoned due to opposition from local residents. With renewed support from the BMC, officials will now identify a suitable location to bring the project to fruition.
If successfully executed, the Mumbai Eye could redefine the city’s tourism landscape, drawing both domestic and international visitors. The project’s final location and timeline are yet to be announced, but its approval marks a major milestone in Mumbai’s urban development.
