Sonamarg has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging from a seasonal retreat to a thriving year-round tourist hub. Traditionally overshadowed by the Srinagar-Gulmarg-Pahalgam circuit, the region has seen an extraordinary rise in visitors. Between 2019 and 2024, tourist numbers surged from 58,309 to 890,874, marking a 1,427% increase. This exponential growth highlights Sonamarg’s newfound appeal, outpacing Kashmir’s established destinations.
A key driver of this growth has been the completion of the Z-Morh Tunnel, which provides all-weather connectivity. Previously, Sonamarg remained inaccessible for nearly five months due to heavy snowfall, but the tunnel now enables uninterrupted travel. The improved accessibility has allowed tourists to explore the region’s winter beauty firsthand, significantly boosting footfall even in colder months.
To accommodate rising demand, the Sonamarg Tourism Development Authority has expanded infrastructure, increasing lodging capacity to approximately 1,270 rooms across hotels, resorts, and guesthouses. Additionally, camping sites have been developed to cater to peak season visitors. These enhancements have enhanced the tourist experience, making Sonamarg a more attractive and accessible destination throughout the year.
This tourism boom has had a profound economic impact on the Ganderbal district, driving job creation and fostering local business growth. The influx of tourists has revitalised the hospitality and service industries, providing a sustainable livelihood for residents. As Sonamarg continues to evolve, it solidifies its position as a key player in Kashmir’s tourism sector, offering both natural beauty and economic prosperity.
